## What is Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)?

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) involves practices and regulations designed to protect the health, safety, and welfare of employees in the workplace.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) refers to the policies, procedures, and activities aimed at ensuring the safety, health, and welfare of individuals in the workplace. OHS is designed to prevent accidents, injuries, and illnesses by addressing potential hazards and implementing control measures. Effective OHS programs involve identifying risks, providing training and education to employees, and ensuring that workplaces comply with safety regulations and standards. This includes proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE), conducting regular safety audits, and promoting a culture of safety among workers.

OHS is crucial not only for protecting workers but also for ensuring business continuity and efficiency. Employers have a legal and moral obligation to provide a safe working environment, which includes managing hazards such as chemical exposure, ergonomic risks, and machinery safety. Regular risk assessments and the implementation of control measures, such as engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE, are essential components of an effective OHS program. Additionally, employees should be encouraged to report unsafe conditions and participate in safety training to foster a proactive approach to workplace safety. Adherence to OHS standards helps reduce workplace accidents, improve employee morale, and enhance overall productivity.

## Components of OHS

1. Risk Assessment: Identify and evaluate workplace hazards.
2. Training and Education: Provide training on safe work practices and emergency procedures.
3. Safety Equipment: Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
4. Incident Reporting: Document and investigate workplace accidents and near misses.
