## What is a Prosthetic Device?

A prosthetic device is an artificial replacement for a missing body part, such as an arm, leg, or eye. Prosthetics help individuals regain functionality and improve their quality of life.

A prosthetic device, often simply called a prosthesis, is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part or supports a damaged limb.

Prosthetic devices are designed to restore function and mobility, improving the quality of life for individuals who have experienced limb loss or limb impairment. They can be customised to fit the unique anatomical and functional needs of the user, incorporating advanced materials and technologies to enhance comfort and performance.

In first aid contexts, responders may encounter individuals with prosthetic devices requiring specialised care. Understanding how to safely manage and assist individuals with prosthetic devices is essential to providing effective emergency assistance. This includes considerations such as ensuring the device remains secure during transport or treatment, and recognising any potential complications related to the prosthetic limb.

## Types of Prosthetic Devices

- Limb Prosthetics: Replacements for arms, legs, hands, and feet.
- Facial Prosthetics: Artificial eyes, ears, and noses.
- Dental Prosthetics: False teeth and dental implants.

## Care for Prosthetic Devices

1. Regular Cleaning: Keep the device clean to prevent infections.
2. Routine Maintenance: Check for wear and tear and have it serviced as needed.
3. Proper Fit: Ensure the prosthetic fits correctly to avoid discomfort and injury.
